Perfecting the Details of Western Decor

Nov 10th 2021

Perfecting the Details of Western DecorYou don't have to live out west to enjoy western design. This theme can inspire decor from another era while still maintaining a sense of comfort and casualness. To take your western decor up a notch by keeping in mind how small accent pieces can bring the room together just as well as cracked leather chairs or mix-and-match tables and chairs.

Let's see how certain details can take your western-style space to the next level and really bring the look together.

Living Room/Bedroom

Every western-themed room must include leather, and these spaces are no exception. Whether it's a plush leather sofa or a comfy leather side chair, the focal piece of the room should incorporate that natural element and your accent pieces should follow suit. Throw pillows that use Native American fabric patterns consisting of geometric and striped designs correlate well with leather.

These spaces are also an excellent area to display antlers, saddles, cowboy hats, and cowboy boots. Candles in natural tones and lighting fixtures made of wood can brighten the space without detracting from the feel of the room. And if you're feeling especially western, try finding carved buffalo or cattle skulls with horns to add a layer of sophistication.

If you want to put up curtains, keep them long and use thick materials like suede or heavy cotton in darker tones. Do other aspects of the room already have busy patterns? Then make your curtains solid. If you're trying to find a good spot for a pop of color and flair, however, curtains can fulfill this purpose.

Kitchen/Dining

These rooms lend themselves well to a western theme since they give you room to get creative with your design. Wooden chairs with arms and long tables fit nicely in a dining area, particularly if they contrast a stone-lined fireplace. Hanging an antler-themed chandelier above the table creates an upward focus in the room, enhancing the space.

In a western-style kitchen, go with darker metal fixtures for the faucet, handles, and hood. These pieces correlate well with dark cabinets. You can also carry over any Native American fabric patterns from the living area into the kitchen bar stools, along with any placemats, napkins, or towels. Saloon-style hanging pendant lights above the island or counter space also add to a western theme while creating smooth lines.

Entryway/Hallway

Cowboys need a convenient place to keep their gear, and your entryway should accommodate that! You can use metal hooks (rusty-looking metal or iron) with distinct features for the walls and add in a wooden bench for a place to kick-off those cowboy boots. Perhaps a wooden wagon wheel or some oil paintings of horses or mountain landscapes will bring everything together.

If you want to add some plant life to your hallway area, try to use plants native to the western desert areas like aloe, cactus, and desert flowers. You can plant them in terracotta pots to complete the look. Also, keep an eye out at antique stores for anything that could fit your western theme, such as old trunks, fireplace tools, or rustic photo frames.

In Conclusion

Transforming a room or home into a western-style oasis means taking advantage of natural, earthy tones and simple designs. Everything should be (or look) old, so check out yard sales, flea markets, and the like. Look for inspiration from Native culture along with the cowboy lifestyle to bring everything together.
